As life expectancy increases, so does the need to understand the
factors that increase health and vitality. Healthy aging is not about
living forever, it’s about maintaining quality of life along the way.
The role that you play in the lifestyle choices that are made are
now more important than ever. The aim is to enhance the quality
of life so that a healthy active life can be maintained at any age.
As you age, there will be periods of both joy and stress. It’s
important to build your resilience and find healthy ways to cope
with challenges. This ability will help you make the most of the
good times and keep your perspective when times are tough.
Exercise is medicine
It is estimated that inactive people are nearly twice as likely
to develop heart disease as those who are more active. Lack of
physical activity also can lead to more visits to the doctor, more
hospitalisations, and more use of medicines for a variety of

disabilities. In some cases, exercise is an effective treatment for
many chronic conditions. For example, studies show that people
with arthritis, heart disease or diabetes benefit from regular
exercise. Exercise also helps people with high blood pressure,
balance problems or difficulty walking. Muscles and joints need
to be kept in use to prevent deterioration.
Regular, moderate physical activity can help manage stress
and improve your mood. Studies show that Serotonin levels
(our own happy hormones) are elevated for up to a few days
following exercise, so being active on a regular basis may help
reduce feelings of depression. Studies also suggest that exercise
can improve or maintain some aspects of cognitive function, such
as your ability to shift quickly between tasks, plan an activity and
ignore irrelevant information.
We touched on diet in our last article on healthy aging and it is
mentioned again as:
Food is medicine
Diet is one factor believed to play a key role in the prevention
and treatment of chronic diseases associated with ageing. Diets
that are high in total fat, saturated fat and salt, high in calories
and sugars and low in fibre, fruits and vegetables, are central
to the development of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes
and cognitive decline among elderly people. In contrast, under
nutrition is also a major problem in this age group, with many
elderly people having low intakes of essential vitamins and
minerals and even protein. Good nutrition is essential for healthy
aging to enable the body to repair, reduce inflammation and
maintain body functions.
Don’t over eat
Over eating can affect the bodies ability to handle calories
causing insulin resistance which can lead to metabolic syndrome,
a risk factor for early preventable disease (including diabetes, and
cardiovascular disease). A physical sign of this is holding excess

Eternal youth is a gift frequently sought in myth and legend,

The truth is more than 40,000 New Zealanders suffer from loss
of memory or dementia, so what can we do to try reverse the
ageing process and arrest the development of this condition?
Cognitive function – how the brain stores information - is the
process by which we become aware of or understand ideas. It
involves all aspects of thinking, reasoning and remembering.
Although memory plays a part in cognitive functioning, other
aspects such as attention, concentration and the ability to plan and
prioritise are also important – not only to an ageing population but
in healthy, normal people as well.
Rhodiola is a herb found in Arctic regions such as Siberia,
Alaska and northern parts of Europe. The botanical name,
Rhodiola rosea, comes from the rose-like odour of the rootstock
when freshly cut.
Rhodiola is regarded as a tonic and stimulant and used to
increase physical endurance, attention span, memory and work
productivity. Along with Siberian ginseng, which was first studied
in the former USSR and used to increase stamina and endurance
in Soviet Olympic athletes, Rhodiola has the ability to stimulate
mental ability without creating the letdown that comes with the
rush of other products such as those containing caffeine.
Although Rhodiola has an immediate positive effect for
memory and recall, clinical trials have found that the Ayurvedic
herb bacopa has a longer effect and increases the rate of retaining
new information – for example trials have shown it can aid
learning a new language when taken over 3 months.
Bacopa has been reported to improve IQ scores in children
and is currently being assessed as a tool to improve aptitude in
intellectually impaired children.
Just like muscular strength, our brain’s ability to remember
increases with mental exercise and good diet. Although the

Watch out for dehydration.
Because of physical changes, older adults are more prone to
dehydration so make sure you are drinking plenty of fluid, even if
you don’t feel thirsty. If you’re not getting enough water, you’re
not going to be as sharp and your energy will suffer.
It’s never too late to start!
No matter how old you are or how unhealthy you’ve been in
the past, caring for your body has enormous benefits that will
help you stay active, sharpen your memory, boost your immune
system, manage health problems and increase your energy. In fact,
many older adults report feeling better than ever because they are
making more of an effort to be healthy than they did when they
