Musings from an island kitchen garden
There have been some lovely gardening days this winter, if a little
cold. When the sun is shining I can usually fnd a sheltered spot to
enjoy some refreshing active work outside.
I’m thinking about purchasing some extra large garden gloves
that are big enough to ft some warm woollen gloves underneath
though. If I am clearing weeds or digging I can warm up quickly,
but my hands do tend to stay cold. However there's nothing like a
well deserved break with a hot cuppa to warm them up.
I have been planning some new permanent plantings for
spring, and have been motivated to get some areas ready so that
it won’t be such a big job when the soil warms up. In my garden
at the moment this usually means clearing away weeds or grass,
adding as much compost and horse manure as I can, then mulch-
ing it heavily.
I look forward to winter evenings in front of the fre. It’s the
time of year that I enjoy planning out new ideas for my garden.
Currently an area I am planning further is my subtropical orchard.
When we moved to this property we inherited some citrus trees
planted on a south facing slope, with ground so boggy in winter
that you can hear the water trickling through it. Needless to say
the citrus were slowly dying off.
After quite a bit of research, I started planning a revitalization
of this area. The frst additional plants I planted nearly three years
ago were bananas. Bananas love water, although technically their
soil should also be ‘well drained’. I’m happy to advise that they
are doing fne, despite being waterlogged for a few months every
Some inspiration recently has been looking at old ‘before’
photos of this area from just a
couple of years ago, and compar-
ing them to what it looks like
I prepared an original plan for
this orchard area that any land-
scape designer would have been
impressed with. It was complete-
ly to scale, with descriptions of
prevailing wind, shelter, slopes,
and shade observations. However
I managed to lose it, I'm still not
sure how, as it was quite large.
The original plan took such an
effort that it's only been now, two
years later, that I've been able to
bring myself to draw another one.
Some of my original plantings
didn't survive, and I've continu-
ally been re-assessing and adding
new ideas since the original plan.
The orchard area is now about a
quarterfully planted, but I am keen to plant the rest over the next
My plan this time is not quite so immaculately drawn, and def-
nitely not to scale. I do however still like the idea of using post
it notes on the base plan, moving things around until everything
fts and makes sense. I often change things around, and it’s very
satisfying, to this gardener at least, when you fnally fgure out the
perfect place for the plant you’ve been musing about for a while.
It’s garlic planting time. Garlic is one of those magic crops, where
you can plant one clove, and lo and behold, six months later it
transforms itself into an entire bulb of cloves. I still don't know
how that happens, but it makes me smile every time. Garlic is
also a perfect crop for the small kitchen garden as it takes up very
little space – you can plant them 10cm apart – and they are ready
